In 1963, Harvey Gantt enrolled at Clemson University, breaking the school’s color barrier. Twenty years later, he became Charlotte’s first black mayor and eventually made two high-profile but unsuccessful runs for U.S. Senate against incumbent Jesse Helms, whose record on race was abysmal.
